Oregon State-Utah report card
from 10 yards out past McNary
g
oalkeeper Kraig Massee with
2
:34 left in the half.
T
he Celtics maintained offen-
sive pressure for the majority of
the first half, but it was the Sax-
ons who capitalized on their
opportunity.
“During practice we do a lot
of shooting, we work on compo-
sure,” Cortes said. “That goal, I
stayed focused.”
F
or most of the second half,
S
outh Salem controlled the pos-
session, but after many shots
against McNary’s goal, the Sax-
ons couldn’t break through.
In the final 10 minutes,
McNary got organized on
offense and had several good
shots, including one from
Steven Rodriguez which
bounced off the cross bar,
b
efore breaking through with
B
eltran’s goal.
“We just needed to pressure
more the defense,” McNary for-
ward Eric Zepeda said. “That’s
what cost us a first goal. We
weren’t pressuring. We played
good in the second half.”
The Celtics marked Zepeda
tightly throughout the match
with two or three defenders at a
time.
As the match moved on, Zepe-
da often took to the wing to
allow teammates more direct
shots at goal.
“We just wanted to shut down
Zepeda,” Foster said. “We want-
e
d to pay special attention to
him and not let him get space
and be able to penetrate our
d
efense because we know he’s
the leading scorer from last
year. He has a good shot, that’s
how they get a lot of their
goals.”
Both teams had
opportunities to take outright
possession of the conference
lead with a win, but the tie
leaves the league’s outcome lit-
t
le different than it was before
the match.
But in a defensive match
s
uch as Tuesday’s, a tie is a pos-
itive result.
“I was happy for 77 minutes,
then unhappy for three min-
utes,” Johansen said. “I’m kind
of a defensive coach. I try to
preach the importance of
defense. I’m a firm believer in
the defense wins champi-
onships mantra. We just were
h
anging on and hanging on and
hanging on, we just couldn’t
quite hang on long enough.
“We need to be just a little bit
better. We need to be three min-
u
tes better.”

PORTLAND — Backers of a plan to put a
Major League Soccer franchise in Portland sub-
mitted a formal bid Tuesday to the MLS.
A statement by Shortstop, LLC president Mer-
rit Paulson on behalf of the organizers indicated
that the group expects a response to their appli-
cation by March 2009 at the latest.
MLS has 14 franchises, with Seattle joining in
2009 and Philadelphia in 2010. The league said it
plans to announce the admission of two more
franchises by the spring. Those new teams would
begin play in the 2011 season.
Paulson owns the Portland Timbers soccer
team and the Portland Beavers minor league
baseball team.
